Dave Elliott Hipp,
born August 1896, son of John A. & Lizzie Elliott Hipp. Nephew
of #'s 12 & 26. His Family lived at the end of Hipp Road in the
same 2-story house his brother Em and wife Virginia occupied. This
house was razed in 1998 for the Oakdale Green subdivision. He &
his wife Bess Tevepaugh lived on W. 5th Street, across from Irwin Avenue
School until his death. |

John Prim, son of Ed &
Harriet Auten Prim, brother of Essie & Joe Prim. John was raised
on the north side of Sunset Road about 1/2 mile east of Oakdale Road
intersection.
He and his wife, Goldie Van Pelt, lived on Prim Rd. where they raised
their children James and Brodie Prim, Myrtle Williams, and Frieda
Jones. Also foster parents to several welfare children, they were
active members at Pleasant Grove where they are buried. |

Israel Grass, son of Linc (spelling?) Grass; brother
of #13. His parents lived on Auten Rd. just south of the Black
Saddle Rd. intersection. He and his wife Mamie Belk Grass lived at
Homestead Mill Village on Mt. Holly Rd. and were very active members of
Hoskins Avenue Baptist Church.
There children were John who is a Southern Baptist minister in TN,
Wilma, and Ida Grass. |

Wesley Elliott, son of John Wesley & Agnes Pettus
Elliott; brother to #'s 16 & 20. His parents lived on Pleasant Grove
Rd. where Dick Mozeley's house now stands. Wesley died in
Thomasville, NC. |

Harry Baker, son of Gus and Lucy Puckett Baker; brother
of #19. They lived on Plank Rd. on the north side of the sharp curve
west of the Dale Ave. intersection. He married #__. They lived
in Thomasboro and were active in Thomasboro Presbyterian Church (now part
of Pleasant Grove Presbyterian Church) until their deaths. No
children.
He was 1st cousin to #18 (their mothers were sisters). |

Bessie Ewing, b. July 1895, daughter of William
(Will) & Clementine Bissell Elliott Ewing. Except for a short
time in Georgia, Bessie was raised on Peachtree Rd. just across from the
Gold Mine Rd. intersection. She and her husband, Harry Y. Puckett,
lived in Charlotte. They are buried at Williams Memorial
Presbyterian Church on Beatties Ford Rd. |

Mattie Belle Nixon, daughter of Coleman & Octavia Auten
Nixon; sister of #10, Leonard, and Hattie Nixon. Mattie Belle became
the wife of Luther Elliott and lived her adult years in Raleigh, NC. |

Sid Nixon, brother of # 9. This fun-loving individual
and his siblings lived with their widowed mother on the North side of
Sunset Rd. about 1/2 mile east of Oakdale Rd intersection.
Sid married Florence Lawing and became the father of Marvin and Boyce
Nixon, Margie Robinson, Shirley McClure, & Vivian Kiser. They
were also foster parents of several Welfare children. He and his
wife are buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. |

John Elliott, b. Nov. 1894, son of Frank & Sally Jamison
Elliott. nephew of #12 & 26. His parents lived on Peachtree Rd.
across from Crandon Park. Their House sat where the Keener's house
now stands (with tennis court in front).
When the children were old enough to work, John's parents moved to
Charlotte where he, two brothers and two of his sisters worked their
entire careers (and retired from) Belk Stores.
John was born with a protruding lower jaw inherited from one of his
family lines. While serving in France in World War I, his facial characteristics
did not allow his gas mask to fit properly. It rubbed a sore on his
face which lead to lockjaw. No treatment was available and death was the
norm; but John lay in a barn on France - and survived. |

David Lawing Elliott, Jr., b. Aug 1896, son of David Lawing
(Dave) Elliott & Minnie Douglas Elliott; brother of #26 & uncle of
#'s 1 & 11. He was one of his father's 17 children in three
marriages. He grew up on Sunset Rd. on Elliott Dr.
He and his wife, Armecia Lawrence from Morehead City, NC, lived on Mt
Holly-Huntersville Rd. and attended Trinity Methodist Church where they
are buried. Son Jack lives beside his parent's home and son Jim
lives in Honeybrook, PA. |

Morris Grass, brother of #3. Morris and his wife lived
on Auten Rd. in the beautiful 2 story house 1/4 mile on right from Oakdale
Rd., now occupied by his daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Don Haverlah.
Some of his other children are Floyd, Wilson, and M.W. Grass and Mildred
Self. He was active at Hoskins Avenue Baptist Church |

Wherry P. (Goat) Taylor, son of William
Taylor; brother of #25. The Taylor family lived on Lawing Rd at the
intersection with Oakdale, Miranda, and Sunset Roads. Their house
sat between the old store and the Church of God of Prophecy.
Wherry married Cora Love from Paw Creek and became the father of Eldora
Byrum. He and "Miss Cora" lived in the same house Eldora and
Lewis Byrum now occupy, but it sat across from Oakdale School where the
BB&T now stands.
He built and ran a store next door in the center portion of the
building that still stands before building his new store beside the
school.
He was instrumental in moving Pleasant Grove Church from its original
site at the cemetery to the present location. He was also greatly
responsible for keeping Oakdale School at its present site after an older
building was destroyed by fire in 195? At that time, the School
Board gave serious consideration to moving it to another location or
combining with another school.

Essie Dunn, daughter of Leo & Lillie
Puckett Dunn (Leolillie Lane is named for this couple). Essie was
raised on the left of Hutchison Lane (behind Pleasant Grove Scout Hut)
then on Pleasant Grove Rd. where Eleanor Dunn now lives.
She married Oliver Lawing and became the mother of John Oliver (died
young), Plato, and Craig Lawing and Madeline Tyson. They lived on
Old Mt. Holly Rd. near the Toddville Rd. intersection while Oliver ran the
Homestead Grocery Store; he subsequently ran a grocery store at Pinoca
(the intersection of Mt. Holly and Oakdale Rds.).
In their later years they built across Pleasant Grove Rd. from the
church (house next to school where Barry Blankenship now lives).
They were active at Pleasant Grove all their lives and are buried at he
Pl. Grv. Cemetery. |

William (Will) Elliott, brother of #4
& #16. Will and his wife Carrie McCall lived in the small white
bungalow at the end of Clinton Dr. (beside Pleasant Grove Cemetery), then
built the white bungalow still standing at the corner of Pleasant Grove
Rd. and Elliott.
His sons Kenny and Bill, both deceased, grew up in Pleasant Grove
Methodist Church. His son John now operates Lawyer's Glen Retirement
Home. Will & Carrie are buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. |

Adelade Bissell Rogers, 1st cousin to #6 - their mothers were sisters. |

Susan Abernathy, daughter of Blythe &
Susan (Sunie) Harry Abernathy; sister of #30.
Never married, she taught school in Eden, NC for years before returning
to her brother's home on Pleasant Grove Rd. (the 2-story farmhouse behind
the City Fire Department). She is buried at Hopewell Presbyterian
Church, Huntersville, NC where her family was actively involved. |

Ethel Cathey, sister ooof #'s 8&
15. Married Wade Tevepaugh of the Moores Chapel - Paw Creek
area. "Miss Ethel" died in 1997 or '98. They were
members of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church. |

Mary Taylor, sister of #14. She
married Robert Sherman (Bob) Kelly. They lived for many years in
Greensboro, NC where they died and are buried. |

May Elliott, b. Nov 1889, sister of #12;
aunt of #'s 1 & 11; future wife of #16 Burton Elliott, her 3rd cousin.
She and Burton lived in the Hickory Grove Community for several years
before building the house on Simpson Rd. now occupied by their daughter
and son-in-law Nellie & Wilmer McCracken. They were dairy
farmers.
Their other children are Pleasant Groves' Howard Elliott, Marybelle
Turner, Annie Mae Parker. Their other child is R.B. Elliott, Jr. who is
deceased. May and Burton Elliott are buried at Pleasant Grove
Cemetery. |

Maud Todd, daughter of Robert (Bob Bully)
& Dora McGinn Todd.
This family lived on Plank Rd. just across from the Dale Ave.
intersection, where one of Oakdale's three large birthday events took
place each year. Bob Bully Todd, Dave Elliott (father of #'s 12
& 26), and Walter Kelly (father-in-law of #25) declared their
birthdays as holidays. No one in the community worked on those days;
everyone took a picnic lunch and went to the particular party.
There is a photo of the sizable Paw Creek Community Brass Band made
beside the Todd home on one of those occasions.
Maud's siblings were Amos, Clayton, and ________ Todd and Annie Belk
(Arlen's mother). Never married, Maud was a seamstress and loyal member
of Paw Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was buried in 1982. |

Lillie McCord, daughter of Monroe Marcellus
(Roe) McCord and Mattie Jamison McCord; sister of #29.
This family lived equidistant from Peachtree and Oakdale Roads behind
Emmanuel Baptist Church. The large oak trees in their front yard are
still standing. |

Harry Abernathy, teacher; brother of
#23. Raised in the 2-story house at the corner of Pleasant Grove and
Kelly Rds, he and his wife lived at the place described with #23.
Farmers, they were parents of Laura Howell, Walter, Richard, Blue, and Dorothy
Abernathy. They were active members of Hopewell Presbyterian Church,
where they are buried. |
